Design for Life: creating meaning in a distracted world

In this talk Stuart Walker considers the relationship between human values, our approaches to sustainability, and the importance of tradition and localization.

He shows why technological approaches can take us only so far, why scientific ways of knowing are insufficient, and that more substantial, lasting change will depend on a transformation in outlook. He will present his Quadruple Bottom Line of Sustainability based on human meanings and show how this informs practice-based design research.

Through a series of speculative designs, he demonstrates how these considerations can affect the nature of our material culture and, in turn, how visualization through objects can inform our values and priorities.
